"What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" (Mark 8:36)
First, let me say there is nothing wrong with having earthly treasures. To have been blessed with abundance is a gift and if you share what you have been blessed with in love with others, you will continue to be blessed. As long as what you have is not the central focus of your life and God is you are in good shape.
You can attain great things in the world but if you do so to the exclusion of God you do so to the detriment of your soul. What good can come from putting the accumulation of wealth and material things before God? No good at all. You may have a great deal as far as the world is concerned, but your soul is in grave danger.
It's finding a balance between accumulation of earthly treasure and heavenly treasure. It is placing God first and then gratefully receiving all that you are blessed with and sharing that wealth with those around you. It is hard to find balance, but if you put God first, listen lovingly to His promptings within you, and love as best you can you can find that sweet place where you are attaining both earthly and heavenly treasure for the glory of God.
Rejoice in what you have been blessed with - your job, your home, your family, your friends, your faith, etc. - and keep God as your main focus.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to place You first in my life - before everything. Thank You for all You have blessed me with. Give me a heart of love and service to others. As I share what You have blessed me with may You be honored and glorified. Amen.
