"You shall not put the Lord God to the test." (Matthew 4:7)
There is a difference between asking God for a sign, clarification of His will for you, or verification that the Holy Spirit is at work instead of an evil spirit or the human spirit and challenging God to do something specific to prove that He can do it. And, being irresponsible, careless or nonsensical and expecting or challenging God to act on your behalf or to intervene is wrong. Asking and/or challenging God to act in order to prove His power in a given situation is just wrong. God can do anything, including what we as humans believe to be impossible. He has infinite power and can move in majesty anytime He so chooses. But they key here is - as He so chooses, not as we choose or challenge.
We can ask God in prayer for what we desire or need and hope that His will for us is the same as our will for ourselves. We can ask God to clarify what spirit is at work in situations. We can even ask God to work miracles and hope that a miracle will happen. But we are not to challenge God in a disrespectful manner to move in power and might. We are not to say, "Do this to prove You are God." We are to be humble, obedient, and respectful when we ask for God's help and His guidance in our lives.
God loves us dearly and wants what's best for us in His love. We are to trust in Him, hope in Him, and love Him with all our hearts, minds and souls and embrace His will joyfully and obediently.
Prayer:
Lord, when I need clarification please send Your Spirit to open my mind and give me the wisdom I need to do Your will in my life. When I turn to You in prayer may I be humble and respectful. And whatever I do, may I do it for Your honor and glory with joy and obedience. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
