"To answer before listening - that is folly and shame." (Proverbs 18:13)
Before I start, I have to admit, I interrupt frequently. It's a terrible habit I am trying to break. So please do not be offended by my writing this piece. I just think a lot of people might struggle like I do.
We should not interrupt others. We should not speak when we are being spoken to. It is arrogance to speak when another is speaking to us. Instead, we should be humble and patient. We should be loving and listen carefully to what is being said to us and wait to respond until the other person is finished.
We should not become excited or aggitated and speak over another. It is rude and disrespectful. We should wait and we will find that others respect us and our responses more than previously. People appreciate being heard. They are grateful for a true, listening heart.
Additionally, we need to be loving and listen carefully to others because God speaks to us in many ways. It may be God speaking to us through another. We never know how God will choose to speak or when. So, let's listen, be humble, be respectful, and not interrupt.
Prayer:
Lord, I ask for Your help not to interrupt others. Help me to be patient, humble and loving. Grant me the grace to lovingly listen and help me to have mercy on others and myself by patiently waiting to speak. Amen.
